Updates to the 2004 Curriculum

Advising News > ChE Curriculum > Other Updates

The Chemical Engineering program is undergoing several changes and while most of them will apply to the new freshman class of fall 2005 and thereafter, some will be visible to the current students as well. The main change for current students is that the number and title of all required CH E courses will change, effective Spring 2006. This handout explains the course renumbering and provides some updates on some additional minor changes in the program. Additional information will appear in the new version of the CH E Advising Handbook, which will be available in August 2005. Apart from the updates discussed here, all other requirements remain the same.

The information in this handout is for CH E students who were admitted to Penn State as freshmen before Summer 2005, whether they are already in the major or heading towards it.

1. Renumbering of Required Chemical Engineering courses

The required chemical engineering courses have been renumbered and in some cases the titles and prerequisites have also been revised. The list below shows the new and old numbers and their effective dates:

Comments

  1. The courses under the new numbering system are fully equivalent to the old ones (but see note below on CH E 302B and CH E 304). For example, if you are supposed to take CH E 414 and the course does not show up in the course catalogs, schedule CH E 430 instead.
  2. CH E 302B and 304, both of which are 2 credits in the old curriculum, will become 3 credits. The effective date for this change is Spring 2007. This should give you ample time to take the 2-credit version. If for any reason you must take any of these two classes after fall 2006, you will have to take the 3-credit version of these courses.
  3. The prerequisites in some courses have changed but if you have been following the published course schedules, these changes will not affect you. Notice that wherever MATH 230 is listed as prerequisite for a CH E course, we will accept MATH 231 instead, provided that you were admitted before summer 2005 (MATH 230 will be required of all students admitted in summer 2005 or later).
  4. The following courses require a minimum grade of C (old numbers in parentheses): CH E 210 (301); CH E 220 (303); CH E 320 (304); CH E 330 (302A); CH E 350 (302B); CH E 410 (413); CH E 430 (414).

Notice that when a C-course is prerequisite for a subsequent CH E course, a grade of C is required before you can take the subsequent course.
