PENN STATE Chemical Engineering
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
in Biomolecular Engineering

The Penn State University department of Chemical Engineering is pleased to be a recipient of a National Sciene Foundation entitled REU in Biomolecular Engineering (NSF Grant #EEC-0353569).
In addition, the Department has funds from an endowment to provide full-time support for an additional 8-10 students in biologically related chemical engineering to carry out summer research (scholarship of $5000).

This is going to be the homepage for the REU program that will include various pictures I have taken as well as information for 'lectures' and finally the virtual poster session.

The server requires specific URL references ... so it will take some effort to annotate etc. I may take advantage of a "webshots" page later.... If people have images they would like to contribute, send them to me and I will add.

FINAL 'POSTER' Presentations

Tushar Desai poster on Use of Soft Lithography for PS-b-PMMA Microdomain Alighment and Fabrication of Rectangular Patterns on Silicon Wafers

Steven Edmund poster on Experimental Investigation of Antiplasticization in LDPE and PDMS – Methanol systems

Jeff Geise poster on Xylitol Production by Quiescent E. Coli Cultures

Nathaniel D. Kopp poster on Bacterial Adhesion and Surface Modification for Micropatterning Bacteria

Abasha N. Lewis poster on Investigating the Separation/Purification of Pegylated Proteins Using Ultrafiltration Membrane Technology

Marcos Perez-Blanco (and mentor Adam Jones' poster on Polymer Plasticization and Devolitilization Studied by Inverse Gas Chromatography

Anthony Tascone and Nicholas Linn collaborated to generate a powerpoint presentation for Bacterial Relay Race

I was hoping to have people take a shot at organizing things into a poster format. I realize time is always crunched, and itis hard to spare the time to generate a polished document ... but I think it is definitely worth the effort to at least generate a draft that will allow you to convey some of the most important points of your summer research experience.

I could see this being done either as a few powerpoint slides ... or better yet as a poster layout. I am providing a few poster examples linked here ... with a few comments. (Unfortunately they are dominated by example of work from my own lab since that is what I have at the momemnt - in the future send me work you get to present.) There are also lots of examples of these hanging in the halls around Fenske for you to look at examples of what might be typical for the laboratory you are working in.

Poster by Amalie Tuerk that won 'best of show award' + $ for undergraduate research competition. Shows creativity in overall layout ... with a 'central hypothesis' at the middle of the poster radiating. Viral Replicase to enhanced protein expression

Here is one from research from last years REU program; presented at a In Vitro biology conference in Baltimore this spring (and basis of an awsome road trip). Gene Expression by Infiltration Lauren (Cornell) went on to Slone-Kettering Cancer center in NYC and just finished the following poster which does a great job of emphacising graphical presentation of methods used (Elisa, FACS). Cancer Immunization Trial

Here is another one from the REU research of last year; Nisha (Rutgers) presented this work presented at the AIChE meeting. It is a good example of a little more 'traditional' layout of ABSTRACT, METHODS, RESULTS ... and includes a dirty picture for 'eye candy' ;) Transient Gene Expression in Cell Culture
