Aaron Fleishman receives $10,000 award
Chemical Engineering undergraduate Aaron Fleishman received a $10,000 award from the ideablob.com contest
that is sponsored by Advanta. The award is recognition for a project focused on developing a
laptop-based system that uses existing cell-phone infrastructure to collect
medical data from children.
The project is called Mashavu, and they are currently working on implementation in Tanzania. For more information refer to the link below.

PSES Awards
Ruth Smith has been named the recipient of a prestigious Penn State Engineering Society (PSES) Outstanding Staff Award for 2008.
The competition for these awards is incredibly high given the quality of staff across the College.
The Department Head Andrew Zydney said, "This is truly a wonderful honor and recognition of all of Ruth's contributions to the Department."
Dr. Darrell Velegol, a faculty member in Chemical Engineering, said, "Ruth's dedication to serving each student with dignity really inspired me to do the same with my undergrad and PhD students."
An Awards Ceremony will be held in the Kunkle Activities Center in Hammond Building on Friday, April 11 at 1:30. Ruth's award comes only two years after Sue
Ellen Bainbridge won this same award in 2006, demonstrating the excellence of the staff in Chemical Engineering.

Graduate student David B. Asay is the recipient of the Rustum and Della Roy Innovation in Materials Research Award.
The Rustum and Della Roy Innovation in Materials Research Award honors interdisciplinary materials research at Penn State which yields valuable, unexpected results and recognizes genuine innovation not previously achieved.
David's advisor is Dr. Seong Kim.

Pennsylvania Farm Show Butter Sculpture
After the conclusion of the Pennsylvania Farm Show,
which ran from January 5 to January 12, about 900 pounds of butter used in the event's famous butter sculpture was scraped off its frame by Penn State farm operations workers,
plopped into barrels and brought back to the University and State College Area High School for conversion into biodiesel.
